Can a serum work as a primer?

Yes, if the serum absorbs within a minute and leaves a smooth, non-greasy finish. Then foundation goes on evenly without a separate primer, and your morning routine is one step shorter. A serum won't do everything a silicone primer does, such as blurring pores or helping makeup last a long day. For everyday makeup, a fast-absorbing serum is often enough.

What a primer does, and what a serum can cover

What to look for in a serum that works as a primer

  1. Fast absorption. It should sink in within a minute, without a wet or tacky layer.
  2. A non-greasy finish. Oil-heavy serums can make foundation slide.
  3. A light texture you can layer under sunscreen without pilling.

How to use a serum as a primer (morning)

  1. Cleanse, and mist if you use a face mist.
  2. Pat 2–3 drops of serum over your face. That covers the whole face.
  3. Wait about a minute, then apply moisturizer if your skin is dry, then sunscreen.
  4. Apply foundation.

FAQ

Do I still need sunscreen if I use a serum as a primer?
Yes. Apply sunscreen after the serum and before foundation every morning.
Can I use a serum instead of a primer every day?
Yes, if your foundation sits well on it. Keep a primer for long days when you need extra wear or pore blurring.
Serum or moisturizer first?
Serum first, then moisturizer. Thinnest to thickest.
Why does my foundation pill over serum?
Usually too much product or not enough time between layers. Use 2–3 drops and wait a minute.
Is a serum-primer good for oily skin?
Choose one with a non-greasy finish, and you may be able to skip moisturizer in the morning.
