Glutathione in skincare: what it does and how to use it
Glutathione is an antioxidant that skincare uses for a brighter, more radiant-looking complexion. It's popular in Korean skincare, where you'll find it in serums and masks. Used every day with sunscreen, and often paired with alpha-arbutin for dark spots, it helps skin look more even and less dull over a few weeks.

What glutathione is
Glutathione is a small molecule made of three amino acids (glutamine, cysteine and glycine). Your body makes it naturally, and it's one of the main antioxidants in your cells. In skincare, it's added to leave-on products like serums and masks.
What it does in skincare
- Antioxidant support: helps defend skin against everyday stress that can make it look dull.
- A brighter, more radiant look: the main reason it's in Korean "glow" products.
- Works well with other brightening ingredients, such as vitamin C, niacinamide and alpha-arbutin.
Results build over weeks of daily use, not overnight.
Glutathione and alpha-arbutin: why they pair well
- Alpha-arbutin is a form of arbutin, an ingredient first found in bearberry plants. In skincare it helps fade the look of dark spots and post-blemish marks.
- Glutathione adds antioxidant support and an overall brighter, more radiant look.
Together they cover two sides of uneven tone: specific dark spots and overall dullness. Both are gentle enough for daily use, morning and night.
How to use glutathione
- Choose a leave-on product, like a serum or a leave-on mask, so it stays on skin.
- Apply after cleansing (and mist or toner), before moisturizer.
- Use it morning and night.
- Wear sunscreen every morning. It protects the progress you make on dark spots.
- Be patient: give it at least 4 weeks.
What to pair it with (and what to space out)
- Pairs well: vitamin C, niacinamide, alpha-arbutin, hyaluronic acid.
- Space out if your skin is sensitive: strong exfoliating acids and retinoids. Use those at night and glutathione in the morning, or alternate nights.
- New to it? Patch-test on a small area for a few days first.
