Can a gel mask replace your moisturizer?

Often, yes. A thin layer of a leave-on gel mask can work as your moisturizer, especially in the morning under sunscreen. Gel textures feel light, sink in fast and don't need rinsing, so they suit normal, combination and oily skin and warm weather. If your skin is very dry, or the air is cold and dry, you may still want a cream on top.

Gel mask vs moisturizer: what's the difference?

A moisturizer is made to sit on skin all day. Creams lean richer; lotions and gels lean lighter.
A wash-off or sheet mask is a short extra step you remove after 10–20 minutes.
A leave-on gel mask sits in between. It's made to stay on, so it can do the moisturizer's job: a thin layer by day, a thicker layer overnight.

Who can skip the separate moisturizer

Normal, combination and oily skin that feels comfortable after a light gel.
Warm or humid weather, when cream feels heavy under sunscreen.

When to add a cream on top

Skin feels tight within an hour or two.

In that case, keep the gel as your first layer and press a small amount of cream over the driest areas only.

How to use a gel mask as your moisturizer

Morning: after cleansing and serum, smooth a pea-sized amount over your face. Wait about a minute, then apply sunscreen and makeup.
Night: apply a generous layer as an overnight mask. It washes off with your morning cleanse.
With a beauty device: apply the mask first and use it as the gel.
